U.S. v. Benjamin Sheds Light On Tangled Federal Bribery Law

The definition of illegal public corruption under federal law has become less clear over time. The resulting uncertainty and complexity have become pronounced in the case of campaign contributions to elected politicians. In this article, we discuss the recent dismissal of bribery charges against former lieutenant governor Brian Benjamin.  In his lucid opinion, Judge Oetken highlighted the thorny issues that divided the prosecution and the defense and resulted in the court’s decision.
